I would never have gotten my current job had it not been for my
dog. Let me explain.
After five years as an internal communications specialist for a mid-size
corporation, I was asked to volunteer within PRSA, which led to work for
a Humane Society fundraiser called the Pug Crawl. The Pug Crawl, like a
traditional Pub Crawl, saw participants walking to several pubs one
Sunday afternoon with their dogs.
On the day of the Pug Crawl - my career turning point - I was introduced
to the Director of Consumer Affairs at KVO Public Relations. The Pug
Crawl became a four-hour, informal job interview, complete with
sunshine, beer, and built-in conversation starters: his Golden
Retriever, Dutchess, and Golden Cocker mix, Arabica, and my Lhasa Apso,
Bailey. Needless to say, there were some awkward moments - four hours is
a long time for a dog to go without squatting, or worse.
Because of my volunteer efforts, I am now a part of what I feel is the
best boutique PR firm in the Northwest (KVO) and the largest PR firm in
the world (Fleishman-Hillard, our parent company).
