SEATTLE, WA: The Fearey Group was brought in by Planned Parenthood
(PP) of Western Washington to assist with the media as its successful
case against Bartell Drug drew to a close.
Planned Parenthood Federation of America filed suit on behalf of
Jennifer Erickson, an employee of the drugstore chain whose
contraceptive pills were not covered by the company's health insurance.
The federal court ordered Bartell to change its policy.
The case was part of PP's program to encourage women to demand
contraceptive coverage in health plans, a campaign chronicled on PP's
www.covermypills.org Web site.
PP's affiliate in Seattle hired the agency towards the conclusion of the
case, when it was apparent extra media help was needed.
"The agency developed all of the background information, press kit
materials and coordinated the development of opinion pieces placed in
papers," said Robert Harkins, VP of public affairs for PP's Seattle
affiliate. Fearey also coordinated all media calls and organized the
press conference following the decision.
PR momentum from this case will no doubt increase the potential and
profile of the campaign. Harkins said his office had already heard from
almost 100 women by e-mail that they plan to take the coverage materials
to their employers.
