Ex-Texas governor to launch PSI in NY

AUSTIN, TX: Former Texas governor Ann Richards will open a New York

City office later this summer for Austin public affairs powerhouse

Public Strategies Inc. (PSI).

Richards officially went on PSI's payroll this past Saturday and will

spend the coming weeks preparing for PSI's Manhattan debut, said PSI

managing director Elyse Yates. The firm is expected to announce other

heavy-hitting hires and affiliations this week for a senior advisory

council that will oversee PSI's entry into New York and European

Since shortly after losing her 1994 gubernatorial re-election bid to

George W. Bush, Richards has been a lobbyist with Washington's Verner,

Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson & Hand.

This move will reunite her with PSI founder Jack Martin. While employed

by then Sen. Lloyd Bentsen in 1982, Martin orchestrated a Democratic

sweep that won Richards her first statewide elected office, that of

Texas treasurer.

He also served unpaid as the treasurer of Richards' campaign committee

from 1986 to 1990.
