Law firm takes PR into its own hands

CHICAGO: Baker & McKenzie, an international law firm with dollars

940 million in annual revenue, is creating its own media relations

department to handle the firm's PR.

Judith Green has been hired in London as global press officer and Paula

Ulijasz has been hired at the firm's headquarters in Chicago as her

Media relations reports to COO David Yates and president Christine

LaGarde in Chicago.

"The firm has recognized the importance of media relations on a global

basis," said Ulijasz. "It's understood the need to channel and integrate

media services with the firm's business plans."

With press officers in London and Chicago, Baker "will be able to offer

near 24-hour press services," said Ulijasz, who will be hiring an

additional PR person in Chicago. Baker has 61 offices in 35 countries

and 8,000 employees.

The firm is looking for a director of marketing as well, seeing

marketing and PR working together to enhance its image, said Ulijasz. No

decisions have been made about taking on a PR firm, she added.

Ulijasz joined the law firm from Milwaukee-based PR shop Zigman, Joseph,

Stephenson where she had worked for five years on public affairs and

issues management.
