ATLANTA: Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGL), the Southeast's largest
natural gas distributor, has announced the formation of new senior PR
position: director of community responsibility
Paula Rosput, CEO of AGL parent company AGL Resources, has appointed
Harriette Watkins, former manager of diversity for Georgia Power
Company, to the post.
While AGL Resources and its entities have a century-long history of
community philanthropy and outreach, the new position and Watkins' hire
indicate the company's effort to put strategic weight behind its
efforts. Most recently, community relations was overseen by a human
resources specialist who has since returned to that department.
Speaking on behalf of Rosput, who was unavailable for comment, Melanie
Platt, VP of investor relations and business support, said Watkins is
expected to not only manage AGL's philanthropic endeavors, but provide
leadership to company executives and service center managers throughout
the Southeast. AGL's current community involvement includes
environmental stewardship, a commitment to build five Habitat for
Humanity homes over the next five years and support of women and
minority leadership organizations.
According to Platt, Watkins' charter in the new position is not only to
manage corporate giving but also to facilitate Rosput's commitment to
develop and deploy an AGL employee volunteer force.
Watkins said she views her biggest challenge as finding out how to "make
the greatest impact on the community in a way that supports and extends
our business strategies." She said that she will be examining a variety
of institutions to encourage board placements and volunteer
participation by AGL executives and employees.
