Bank One brings in IBM's McMullen

CHICAGO: Melinda McMullen has been named the new SVP of

communications and public affairs for Bank One, the country's

fifth-largest bank holding company.

Joining this week, McMullen will report to chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon,

and will oversee corporate communications, media relations,

contributions, and community affairs, as well as the bank's

Dimon came to Bank One in March 2000 to turn around an institution that

had been plagued by problems at its First USA credit card unit. It also

had invested heavily in Internet-only bank, which it

closed this year after failing to attract a large-enough customer

McMullen is replacing Gerald Buldak, a longtime fixture of Chicago

banking PR, who has taken early retirement. She comes to Bank One from

IBM, where she was VP of communications for IBM Global Services.

"Bank One's continuing improvements provide excellent opportunities to

tell our story," she said. The bank recently reported second quarter

earnings of 60 cents per share, compared to a loss of $1.11 per

share in the same quarter last year.
