CAREERS: My Big Break

Many alumni from my alma mater, Lafayette, volunteer to host

students at work for a few days during January break. As a sophomore in

1990, I had no idea what career path to pursue, and thought this

"externship" program was an excellent way to find a potential

I knew I was interested in working with people and communicating

verbally and on paper. I knew that no matter what I did, I truly wanted

to make a difference. With those inclinations in mind, I expressed

interest in working with a corporate psychologist, an environmental

lawyer, or a PR exec.

I was matched with the PR exec, Mark Staples of Lansdale, PA, and

haven't looked back since. Mark was an excellent host and remains high

on my list of people whose input I value.

My first job was listed in The New York Times classified section as

"entry level PR position; driver's license required." From such humble

beginnings my career in automotive PR was put in gear. That first job

led to my placement at General Motors' agency Fred Mackerodt, Inc. from

1993-1996. I moved on to Volvo Cars of North America from 1996-2000.

Today I handle PR for automotive internet leader

- Jeannine Fallon is director of PR at in Santa Monica, CA.
