How long have you been in your job? 4.5 years.
Describe the space you work in. I have a nice office, with an L-shaped
desk (with piles of stuff on it), a blue Mac G3, and two printers. Their
location indicates their importance. Also I have a small round table for
tiny meetings, bookcases and file cabinets. One wall is entirely made up
of window with a view of the parking lot.
Who is the smartest person you work with? All of them. They are all
PhD.s after all.
Who is the craziest? I think it's my boss. He's the one doing the snake
behavior research. He also drives cars and boats like a madman, has way
too many projects in the pipeline, says "yes" to just about everyone and
everything, and is always willing to take on my problems, projects, etc.
He's completely mad.
What is the best thing about working there? The work is usually very
interesting, so it's easy to get the media involved. They tend to love
us and it seems we have only good news to give them. I do very little
crisis management and a lot of pitching. I also love the students, some
of whom are international.
And the worst thing? Some of the scientists don't like working with the
press and others get jealous of those who do. The politics make it a
minefield at times.
What's been your biggest mistake while working there? I once missed an
e-mail telling me a VIP from Washington, DC would visit on a certain
date. As I was the only one notified, we were unprepared until the day
before, when I realized what had happened. It was embarrassing and it
could have made us look like a bunch of fools. Fortunately, we were able
to pull together a good tour for him without missing a beat.
Sneak us a good piece of gossip from your office. The director's
secretary is a rock musician on the side!
