Marconi reworks PR staff, strategy

NEW YORK: In the same week it ousted its chairman and CEO, troubled

telecom firm Marconi is reorganizing its in-house PR.

The firm is searching for two PR chiefs to run its US and Asia Pacific

operations. It has already hired Joe Kelly from Xerox as VP of PR for

Kelly said, "The PR strategy will change given the company's change in

circumstances." However, he added that it was "too early to tell" what

the future strategy might be.

Marconi handed Hill & Knowlton a $10 million assignment in May.

H&K trumpeted the win as one of its biggest recent victories, and takes

credit for helping Marconi become a high-profile telecom player. H&K

president Paul Taaffe distanced the agency from Marconi's problems,

saying that it was not involved in corporate communications. Brunswick

UK handles that role, along with in-house staff.

"Marconi will change the way they do everything," said Taaffe, who

added, "PR is the least of their worries, let alone corporate PR."
