CAREERS: Where I Work - Gabe Cherry, PR manager, Brogan & PartnersConvergence Marketing

How long have you been in your job? Two years

Describe the space you work in. My office (there are no cubicles at

Brogan) faces north, looking out on Detroit's New Center neighborhood.

It consists mostly of apartment buildings from the 1920s and streets of

stately brick houses built long ago for the bigwigs at General Motors.

Our offices are on the 19th floor, so on a clear day, I can see the

skyscrapers in Southfield (a Detroit suburb) and the Pontiac Silverdome

20 miles away.

Do you socialize with your colleagues? Absolutely. We go out in a group

for the usual Friday night drink, and several Broganites are good

friends of mine. Our biggest social outing each year is the out-of-town

"mystery trip," a four-day company-paid vacation for the whole agency.

Last year's trip was to London.

Who is the smartest person you work with? Kelly Major. She's a master

marketing strategist. In fact, we call her our "brain on a Chain." She

has worked as a strategist for Andersen Consulting and CSC Index, as

well as for the Kmart.

How comfortable are your offices? Our offices are quite comfy, thanks to

our casual environment and Aeron chairs. It's a very pleasant place to

work, though Marcie (Brogan, managing director) does like to blast the

air conditioning. Summer visitors to Brogan are encouraged to bring a

And the worst thing? Marcie summoning us to agency meetings by singing

The Star Spangled Banner.

What's been your biggest mistake while working there? Cutting myself

fairly badly on my second day here. I was helping the creative

department mat some storyboards when I got careless with the X-Acto

knife. Imagine our art director's surprise when she looked over to see

the new intern bleeding all over the mat room. I'm still not allowed

near sharp objects.

Sneak us a good piece of gossip from your office. We've been able to

keep Maddie and Lucy, our office mascots, despite dirty looks from the

Fisher Building management. Maddie and Lucy are black pugs (the small,

wrinkly dogs you see on greeting cards).
