CAREERS: My Big Break - John Clemons is VP of internalcommunication at Nextel Communications in Reston, VA

I was a magazine editor in NYC in 1981, seeking a corporate comms

position. I needed benefits and more salary, particularly since I was

about to be married! I had a glamour job, one that paid more in access

to hip receptions, celebrity interviews and travel junkets, rather than

cash. My search was fruitless until I visited some friends at the paper

I once worked for.

Upon arriving, one of the editors casually mentioned AT&T was looking

for a newsletter writer/editor. She gave me a contact. My background as

a reporter for a major daily (The Star-Ledger) and magazine editor

(Black Enterprise) paved the way for me to get the AT&T interview - and

the job.

I learned the basics of producing an employee newsletter - from proofing

copy and photo editing to blueline review and printing processes. It was

all new and exciting. I was a sponge, working for some of the best in

the business. I also learned how to produce special events, community

and media relations, video production, photography, speechwriting, and

related communication areas during my seven years at AT&T. I have all

this to thank for the many great jobs I've had, including my current

position at Nextel.
