How long have you been in your job? A year-and-a-half.
Describe the space you work in We have a unique space in the SOMA
district of San Francisco, so the layout is quirky and far more
interesting than the average office space. The set up is extremely open.
Our main room is an open loftish space with a number of low wall desks -
plus a number of large, team workspaces with big conference-style
tables, sofas, and easy chairs - so we can easily work and discuss
projects at the same time. Adjacent to this a very low-ceiling room (the
John Malkovich room), with a couple of beanbags. On the second floor, we
have a full kitchen and three different conference rooms. And out back,
we have a roof patio. We have two full-fledged bathrooms (shower and
bath), which actually came in handy when my water pipes broke at home.
The true beauty of it is that we have a wireless network. We all use
laptops so we set up wherever we choose on a given day ... conference
room, desk, and back patio.
Do you socialize with your colleagues We socialize quite a bit. Once in
a while we spend Friday happy hour at The Ramp, a bayside pub in San
Francisco. On Thursday nights, we like to get together at a bar in the
Haight where one of our former co-workers produces a weekly happy-hour
dance party. We have many DJs on staff, so all our parties have great
music.
Who is the craziest person you work with? We're all nuts in our own
special ways here.
What is the best thing about working there? The freedom, independence,
and responsibility, plus being able to avoid a nasty SF Bay Bridge
commute by working at home.
What is the worst thing about working there? I'd say the uniform with
the striped hat and the chicken on the apron. No, really, it's not
having a dishwasher.
What's been your biggest mistake while working there? Hitting the
"reply-all" button when I meant to send a private message to my
boss.
Sneak us a good piece of gossip from your office Our CIO's secret pirate
nickname is Captain Shorty Pants.
