LAST CALL: US anti-bin Laden propaganda falls on skeptical ears

America's latest leaflet campaign across Afghanistan has pundits

worried that the Pentagon may go too far.

ABCNews.com recently reported that new leaflets were dropped depicting

Osama bin Laden with a shave, a haircut, and fitted into a "beige

Western suit."

The reverse side showed a dead al Qaeda member with the words, "The

murderer and coward has abandoned you," implying that a beaten bin Laden

wouldn't be loyal to Afghanistan.

But the article reported that American media and propaganda is treated

with great skepticism in Afghanistan. Many apparently believe that the

US tampered with the bin Laden video of September 13.

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld did not disclose whether the picture

of bin Laden in this latest campaign was authentic. "The whole premise

of bin Laden's activities in the world are premised on lies," he told

journalists at a press conference.
