CA in agency talks about PR business

ISLANDIA, NY: Computer Associates (CA) has been talking to PR

agencies, but it is not yet clear whether this means a change of agency

is definitely planned.

Robert Gordon, VP of PR, confirmed that the company had been courting an

undisclosed number of firms, but would not reveal any details about the

nature of the review.

CA currently retains The Weber Group as agency of record. Keith

Lindenburg, who is now coleading Waggener Edstrom's new Stamford, CT

office, formerly led the account for Weber.

In 2001, the company was tied up in a major PR battle when shareholder

Sam Wyly launched a campaign to replace CA's board. Wyly used the media

to publicize the company's management troubles, and make his case for

new leadership.

CA retained Citigate Sard Verbinnen to help with the proxy fight, and

the company managed to fend off the threat when it came to the

shareholders for a vote in August.

Last November, CA launched a new branding campaign to help business

consumers and potential investors understand the company and its

products.
