It's a dangerous job, this PR lark.
In one corner there was Fernando Vargas, wearing an electronic monitor
to fulfill a 90-day sentence for conspiracy to commit assault. In the
other was his rival, Oscar De La Hoya - the Golden Boy of boxing and
favored fighter for thousands of swooning women. In the middle sat Top
Rank's nervous publicist Ricardo Jimenez.
Despite multiple police officers and security guards on stage, De La
Hoya and Vargas - kicking off publicity for their May super-welterweight
title bout - got into a scuffle during a press conference last week at
the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.
While trying to help pull the two apart, Jimenez got stampeded by other
interveners and scored a broken right leg that may require surgery.
The press conference went on despite the casualty, but we assume Jimenez
will stay outside the ring during the bout.
