NEW YORK: New York State comptroller Carl McCall has replaced Joe Trippi, the media consultant for his Democratic gubernatorial campaign, with hard-nosed veteran strategist Hank Sheinkopf.Sheinkopf, who joined McCall's bid in December, has been handed control of an operation that has been criticized by pundits for not delivering a compelling-enough message.
Described by one Democratic insider as "over-the-top,
a "tough-guy" adept at "in-your-face quotes and pithy one-liners,
Sheinkopf could bring punch to a candidacy that, as an article in The New York Times put it, has so far taken a decidedly "gloves on
approach to its primary race against Andrew Cuomo, who is known to practice full-contact politics.
"I think it's taken a little bit of time for it to settle in with McCall's campaign that they are in a tight race,
explained Ken Sherrill, a political science professor at the City University of New York's Hunter College.
"Hank really knows the rough and tumble of New York politics,
"His hiring represents a sign that McCall is willing to adapt a more aggressive strategy, and that he is intent on playing to win.
"I think this,
Sherrill concluded, "is fighting fire with fire."
