Opportunism, cause-related marketing, and racism all came together in one shining example of ignorance last month, courtesy of the Union Deposit, PA Giant Food Store. The manager, whose heart may or may not have been in the right place, wanted to commemorate Black History Month. Problem? He did it by running - and advertising - a sale on fried chicken, thus perpetuating the most dull-headed of all African-American stereotypes.
Angry customers began complaining immediately, but employees were slow to respond, not understanding how anyone could take offense at such an innocuous promotion.
When the controversy reached Giant's head office, it was quick to stop the promo and apologize. There has been no indication, however, that those responsible have been let go.
Some free PR advice: Consider the above option. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is coming. And while we applaud Giant's restraint in not running a February special on melons, we shudder to think what the future may bring.
