Republicans basked in the revelation that then-presidential candidate Bill Clinton once smoked marijuana. So PRWeek was surprised to find that the GOP had given one of its Businessmen of the Year awards to a person who makes the type of paraphernalia - one-hitters, pipes, and rolling papers - used by dope-smokers.
Chris Hill, owner of Chills, was chosen as one of the 500 top businessmen of 2001 by the by the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC).
Only after the media drew attention to the fact that Chills makes products used by pesky potheads did a GOP spokesperson grudgingly announce that if it was found out to be true, his award would be revoked. The website - www.chills.com - suggests that the products therein are for, ahem, tobacco-smoking.
"It shows where their priorities are,
said Mark Blevins, spokesperson for the Democratic Congressional Committee. "This is one of the NRCC's insidious practices to gobble up cash. They're not interested in who they hand out awards to. It's finally caught up with them."
