I fell into PR quite by accident. As a recent college graduate, I, like many of my peers, was contemplating my career path.Back in the ancient days of finding out about jobs from the newspaper classifieds, I responded to an ad for an administrative position with a non-profit organization. I was called in for an interview, and pretty much got the job on the spot.
Just prior to my first day on the job, I was surprised to learn that the position had been changed to a PR and marketing coordinator. Though my experience was slim to none, I was offered the job and accepted the challenge by throwing myself into it wholeheartedly.
The outcome? I absolutely loved it. I excelled at media relations, and in a short time, I generated significant media exposure for the organization by putting them on the map, so to speak. It didn't take me very long to realize that this was the career for me.
Some years later, I went on to form my own marketing and PR agency, Blattel Communications. Twelve years later, we are still going strong. I still get the same rush of excitement as I did when I started out. I just could never imagine doing anything else.
