COLUMBUS, OH: Ohio State University will begin offering a new strategic communications program next fall that will combine PR and business courses.The new program represents a revitalization of the PR curriculum at OSU, said Carroll Glynn, director of the school of journalism and communication.
In recent years, OSU has merged its schools of journalism and communications.
PR was part of the journalism program, but there was only one PR professor when Glynn took over.
Glynn has been implementing a five-year plan for the new program and, as part of that, "wanted to go beyond PR as a narrow definition, incorporating business and other aspects of the communications field," she said.
The new program will require students to take traditional PR campaign and writing courses, as well as financing, marketing, and organizational communications courses, all currently offered by OSU's business college.
The program will offer a liberal arts degree with a specialization in strategic communications. A master's program is also being considered, and may be in place next year.
