MOSCOW: Russia's ministry for economic development has announced measures to develop tourism in the country, including advertising and PR support for its main tourist attractions.

Russia occupies 13th place in Europe in terms of the number of tourists it attracts. Its share of global tourist traffic is about 1%.

Press reports have indicated that the budget will be about $40 million, although this has yet to be confirmed. It is not yet known how the budget will be shared between local and foreign firms.

The most popular tourist routes in Russia run through Moscow, St. Petersburg, and the so-called Golden Ring - a chain of fortresses and monasteries in the center of European Russia.
