CAREERS: My Big Break

Six words epitomize my big break: "It's a small world after all."

Six words epitomize my big break: "It's a small world after all."

Chance occurrences crisscrossing the globe from Montgomery, AL to Tokyo, Japan to Orlando, FL vaulted my career to gratifying heights. In 1991, I was chief political correspondent for the CBS affiliate in the capital city of Alabama. An exciting assignment came my way by special appointment from the governor of Alabama.

I was chosen to represent the state at a cultural summit between the US and Japan in Tokyo. During this international gathering, I met a delegate from Florida who was VP of marketing for Walt Disney World at the time.

A former TV news refugee himself, he empathized with my uncertainty about what else was out there professionally.

That chance meeting in Japan between a TV reporter from Alabama and a Disney marketing exec resulted in my magical eight-year run in the publicity, marketing and brand management departments at Walt Disney World.

While at Disney, I forged a terrific professional alliance with Joel Curran. Both of us "marketeers

are now at CKPR. I'm back in Orlando by way of Milwaukee. It really is a small world after all!

Bobby Holcombe is currently VP at CKPR in Orlando, FL.
