Six years ago I came to LA from Montreal to take a summer course at UCLA in entertainment studies which required me to find an internship.I was passionate about the TV industry, but having no Hollywood connections, I lacked direction.
Seeking inspiration , I flipped through the TV section of the yellow pages and came across Fox Broadcasting Company. For some reason, the operator transferred me to the publicity department. I managed to score an unpaid summer internship.
While there, I learned everything about prime-time network PR - writing press materials, pitching media, assembling clippings, and dealing with fan mail. It wasn't glamorous, but it was never boring and it made me realize that I wanted a PR career.
I moved to LA as soon as I graduated and enrolled in a PR certificate program at UCLA Extension, where I learned from fantastic instructors who had worked in media relations.
As luck would have it, Fox contacted me about a full-time position in the publicity department. I've since transferred to Magnet Communications, but the media contacts I fostered at Fox still come in handy today.
I can't thank Jill Hudson and Joe Earley enough for taking a chance on a Canuck.
Niki Ostin is currently an account exec at Magnet in LA.
