MANTEO, NC: CKPR has won a new PR assignment thanks to the Wright Brothers.

The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau has hired CKPR and its ad partner, Cramer-Krasselt, for a $2 million integrated assignment that will include advertising and PR focusing on the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers' first flight.

The flight took place in December 1903 near Kitty Hawk, NC, in the area of the state known as the Outer Banks. A variety of other organizations, ranging from the Air Force to the state of Ohio, are also planning events tied to the centennial.

The Outer Banks expects a flood of tourists as the flight's anniversary approaches. CKPR will handle media relations, events, and community outreach.

Bobby Holcombe, a VP in CKPR's Orlando, FL office, who will be working on the PR portion of the account, said, "The interest is already building. Our job is to manage that. A year of activities is planned starting this December, and ending the week of December 13, 2003.

How much of the $2 million budget will be spent on PR has yet to be determined.

"(PR spend) has got the potential to really grow, said Carolyn McCormick, managing director of the visitors bureau. "We want to make sure that we maximize everything we can, and build up the reputation of the Outer Banks."
