CAREERS: Where I Work - Jonathan Lance, PR manager, LifeChiropractic College West

How long have you been in your job? Over five years.

How long have you been in your job? Over five years.

Describe the space you work in My office has framed posters of Russell Chatham, open-space landscapes on the walls, and very little open-space on the desk, which looks like one of our famous California earthquakes just rolled by. And if you enjoy watching large trucks blast by all day long, I've got the window for you.

Who is the smartest person you work with? Undoubtedly, our president Dr. Gerard W. Clum. He has a photographic memory, so it's impossible to put something by him. When it comes to media relations, he is a PR pro's dream. He can speak scientifically or "bring it down for the general media. I tell all reporters that they will not be disappointed in him as a source, and they always agree.

Who is the craziest? One of our chiropractic technique professors, Dr. Paul Walton. He's one of our extremity-adjusting experts. A true "Dead head who usually gears up in shorts, Hawaiian shirts, and sandals. But you should see the line of students and staff who want to get adjusted by him during his lunchtime adjusting labs - and the longer line of those who just watch.

What is the best thing about working there? The students. It's great to see so much friendly and positive passion. I get more satisfaction from writing a recommendation that helps a student get a scholarship than a news release that leads to a major media hit.

And the worst thing? Before coming to Life West, I worked for a couple of San Francisco PR firms. Sometimes I miss being in an office filled with fellow PR pros. There is no one to talk shop with here. When PRWeek comes in, I'm the only one that gets excited.

And your luckiest break? About four years ago I joined the board of directors of PRSA's professions section, The Health Academy. It's been an outstanding education.

What is the biggest thing to hit your office in the past year? Scientific American Frontiers (the PBS show narrated by Alan Alda) was recently on campus shooting an upcoming segment on alternative healthcare. The program is slated to air this month.

Sneak us a good piece of gossip from your office A starter for the San Francisco 49ers has been coming to our college's public health center for his chiropractic care.
