SEATTLE - Amazon.com is conducting a search for one or more PR agencies to handle corporate and retail work for the online company.
But the review has been put on hold temporarily, following the recent departure of marketing VP Lance Batchelor, who initiated the review.
Batchelor left the company for a position with Vodafone in London, according to Judy Johnson, EVP at Golin/Harris International, which has been working with the company.
Amazon, founded in 1995, has never retained an agency of record, but has used several firms for different issues, including Golin, which is also participating in the review. It is understood that the task at hand is a repositioning one. Amazon, while being a figurehead of the dot-com movement, is now competing against traditional retailers such as Wal-Mart.
Last week, Amazon was in the headlines over SEC investigations dating back to 2000. One informal investigation into the company's strategic partnerships was terminated without any action taken. But Amazon was rapped in a separate investigation over its involvement in Ashford.com's financial disclosures, which were the result of the settlement of a business dispute between the two companies. Amazon's accounting practices were not called into question during that investigation.
