NEWS IN BRIEF: US Supreme Court to review ruling

BEAVERTON, OR: Nike has asked the US Supreme Court to review a ruling by the California Supreme Court. The court's ruling held that statements made by the company in a letter to the editor, written in response to criticism from activists about its labor practices, is effectively commercial speech, and must be held to the same legal standard as advertising. Nike has said that the ruling "effectively eliminates First Amendment protection for businesses or organizations that speak out on public issues related to their business."
