PORTLAND, OR: Social Venture Partners Portland (SVPP), a local nonprofit that educates philanthropists on how to give to charity by using a venture capital model, has named Maxwell PR as its agency of record. SVPP hopes that Maxwell can help lend credibility to the idea that new methods of giving will help close the gap created by declining corporate donations.
Maxwell will provide pro bono PR and marketing support to the group of about 60 members, which celebrated its first anniversary on August 1.
SVPP calls itself a leader in "venture philanthropy. Members invest annually in a venture fund distributed to local charities, then nurture their investment by volunteering hands-on guidance and expertise.
The group, which focuses on education and children's programs in the four counties surrounding Portland, has donated $80,000 in funds and $100,000 in time and expertise.
According to Kathrin Larson of Maxwell, the agency will support recruitment, target speaker's bureaus, and provide local media relations for SVPP.
A major goal is to increase visibility and awareness of the group and its practices. "They're introducing a new way of giving, Larson said. "It's really quite admirable."
