CAMDEN, NJ: Campbell Soup has hired a Beltway veteran as its new VP of government affairs.
Kelly Johnston, EVP of government affairs and communications with the National Food Processors' Association (NFPA), will move to his new post at Campbell September 3.
Campbell has been without someone in that job since the former government affairs VP retired more than a year ago.
"It's a need we felt we had to fill, said John Faulkner, Campbell director of brand communications, about Johnston's hiring.
Campbell was familiar with Johnston from his work at the NFPA, a food-industry group. His combination of food-industry experience and Washington experience made him an attractive candidate, Faulkner said.
Johnston started at the NFPA in 1996, and held such jobs as chief spokesman and chief federal and state legislative affairs representative.
He also served as secretary of the US Senate from 1995-96. He's been a staff director for the Senate Republican Policy Committee, deputy assistant secretary of public affairs in the Department of Transportation, and deputy political director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee from 1989-91.
Johnston will report to Ellen Kaden, Campbell SVP for law and government affairs.
