CAREERS: Where I Work - Donovan Roche, Director, San Diego office, Formula PR

How long have you been working there? Six years.

How long have you been working there? Six years.

ou end up in your job? I was a struggling entertainment writer looking for a way to make a living. I stumbled upon this classified ad for a PR internship. After applying, I discovered it was "for experience only" (read: non-paying). It was a tough three months, but it has certainly paid off. I am now director of that very same agency.

What is the best thing about working there? The people I work with are some of my closest friends. In fact, they're more like family to me. We have shared some landmark moments in our lives together, from weddings to the births of our children. You can't find that kind of camaraderie in every office.

And the worst thing? The early mornings. I've always been a nighttime person. It goes back to my college days. Staying up to watch Letterman was always easier than getting up early for a class. Today, my alarm goes off before my kids' at 5:45am. It's just not right.

What is the most exciting project you have worked on recently?

Right now I'm pitching entertainment media ESPN's new reality show Beg, Borrow & Deal. It's quite a departure from my typical business/technology accounts, but it's right up my alley given my former career in journalism. I'll say this: it's a lot easier to sell ESPN than it is a no-name widget company.

If you could do your job from any location (other than where you are now), where would it be? Well, living in San Diego, I don't really have too much to complain about, do I? I suppose, however, that if I could do my job from the beach, like that guy in the Corona commercial, that wouldn't be half bad. But I suspect clients wouldn't appreciate all the slurred speech ... it's just not becoming of a PR pro.

What is one thing about you that none of your coworkers know?

We go through a lot of team-building exercises here, so I can't imagine that there is anything I haven't shared yet. They already know that I appeared on Love Connection (it wasn't) and have a penchant for singing Prince's Kiss in dingy karaoke bars. Isn't that enough?
