PALO ALTO, CA: Hewlett-Packard has altered its communications chain of command to ensure more collaboration and clarity.

Mike Winkler, former EVP of worldwide operations, is now HP's first CMO.

Allison Johnson, SVP, global brand and communications, who reported to CEO Carly Fiorina, now reports to Winkler. Winkler and Johnson remain on the executive team.

Previously, each business unit's communications team worked independently, with a marketing council trying to ensure clarity and consistency of message, said Tim Marklein, director of corporate media relations. Now, each unit's communications team will check in with Johnson and the head of their marketing team.
