SAN FRANCISCO: Magnet Communications has selected Karen Klein as the new GM of its Bay Area office.

Klein was GM of Weber Shandwick Worldwide's San Francisco office. She takes over for Holly McArthur, who will remain an EVP, but stepped down as GM to spend time with her newborn twins. Sheri Benjamin, president of WSW's US tech practice, will take over for Klein until she is replaced.

"The Bay Area economy is very suited to an agency like Magnet," said Klein, who has also worked for BSMG and Fleishman-Hillard. "It's tough for big agencies to scale down to where the market is. Magnet has that flexibility."

Klein said she wants to focus on expanding the office's consumer, hi-tech, wine, and professional-services practices.

"I don't take moving around lightly," she said. "I like being part of a marquee agency. And I think Magnet has emerging marquee status."
