NEW YORK: Former Newsweek editor Ed Kosner was appointed editor of the Sunday edition of the Daily News. Kosner, also a former editor of New York and Esquire magazines, took up the post on Monday, November 16.
Kosner's appointment comes amid a shake-up at the News, which previously had a seven-day a week operation overseen by Debby Krenek.
Krenek, the first ever woman editor-in-chief at the paper, will now concentrate her efforts on the Monday to Saturday editions.
According to the Audit Bureau of Circulation figures to 30 September, the Daily News has been increasing its readership. Monday to Friday total circulation increased year-on-year from 721,256 to 723,143. The Sunday edition also gained from 807,788 to 810,295, while only the Saturday edition lost ground.
Harold Evans, editorial director of the Mort Zuckerman and Fred Drasner-backed paper said: 'The Sunday Daily News is already the sixth largest Sunday in the United States. Ed Kosner will have the resources to take it further.'
Krenek chose the occasion to announce a number of promotions at the weekday operation: Bob Sapio was named executive editor, Arthur Browne is now senior managing editor for news; while Bill Boyle will be managing editor for news.
