Cable scores in sweeps stakes

Combined ratings for the basic cable networks have increased by 10% during the sweeps, compared with the same period last year.

The broadcast networks - ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox - were collectively down 9%. And with smaller stations WB and UPN included, the fall was 12% for the first three weeks of the four week period. The figures represent a long-term trend of viewers turning to niche stations.
