Want to get noticed in the rough-and-tumble world of sports PR? Follow the lead of Hofstra University and enact a meaningless name change.
Effective immediately, the university's Sports Information Office wants to be known as the Office of Athletic Communications.
While associate director of athletic communications Len Skoras said the university had received no complaints about the old name, he described it as 'vague' and said, 'It didn't give people what they wanted.' When asked exactly what people wanted, Skoras declined comment.
However, the name change has got Hofstra noticed. It garnered a mention as 'Transaction of the Day' in Sports Illustrated and was featured on ESPN2's 'Bottom Line' in a 'You-would-have-missed-it-if-it-weren't-for-us' segment.
'We figured they might have some fun with us,' said Skoras.
