PEARL RIVER, NY: Frontline Communications has hired former PBS PR pro Richard Byrne to head corporate communications.

In the newly created position of director of communications, Byrne will oversee strategy development and brand building for Frontline's online e-commerce businesses. He will also work on corporate image development and media relations.

Byrne said he left his communications post with a PBS documentary program?coincidentally, also named Frontline?because the company offered him a chance to become involved with the Internet. 'Even though I had an interesting job at PBS, there was a part of me that felt there was a train rushing by,' Byrne said.

Frontline, a Nasdaq-traded company that went public last May, provides e-commerce and Web access to small businesses. The company's three online brands are frontline.net, WOWFactor.com and channeliShop.com.

Byrne was hired by PBS's Frontline in 1996 as a senior publicist.
