Hawthorn grabs educational pro

WASHINGTON, DC: Shaila Aery once taught students in the classroom. Now, her educational efforts will be directed at the key constituencies that The Hawthorn Group's clients need to reach.

Aery, named president/ COO of the DC office, is a former chief of staff to Sen. Barbara Mikulski, and that experience in managing will be useful. Her primary mission in the coming six months will be to assure the long-term profitability, strategic growth and management of the fast-growing Hawthorn Group's DC operations.

PRWeek's Top 200 rankings show The Hawthorn Group's 1998 income of dollars 8,051,443 had almost doubled from the previous year. Staff more than doubled as well, increasing from 30 to 68 members. But long-term, Aery wants to 'mine' public affairs work on behalf of educational entities and businesses for the agency.

Aery holds a doctorate in educational psychology and a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from Oklahoma State University. She was commissioner of higher education for Missouri during most of the 1980s and secretary of higher education in Maryland from 1989 to 1995.
