DIARY: The United Nations declares war on ABC 'Kofi break' ad

The United Nations' peacekeeping force might not strike fear into the hearts of the world's tyrants, but don't mess with the UN's pun police.

The United Nations' peacekeeping force might not strike fear into the hearts of the world's tyrants, but don't mess with the UN's pun police.

The UN is going after ABC TV's Internet service over an ad that plays on Secretary-General Kofi Annan's name. 'Got time for a Kofi break? Delegate a few minutes to news at your desk,' the ad read.

The UN was not amused. 'The use of the secretary-general's name and photo were not authorized by the UN,' spokesman Manoel de Almeida e Silva said, adding that he knew of no attempts by ABC to get permission. Perhaps Silva was just jealous that Kofi is an easier name to make pun of than his own.

'Inasmuch as this may raise legal issues, the legal office is looking into the matter,' he added. Will Johnnie Cochran be called in, we wonder?

This isn't the first time that Annan's name has been punned. A dating service once promised potential applicants that they would meet someone 'who knows that Kofi Annan is not a decaffeinated brew.' Annan apparently thought more highly of this attempt ? he has used the quip in speeches.
