PHOENIX: Electronics and computer distributor Avnet has consolidated its six-figure global PR account with Brodeur Worldwide.
Avnet chief communications offer Al Maag said that Brodeur's electronics expertise (the firm handles Philips) and global reach were important, but the key factor was Brodeur's presence on the ground in Phoenix.
'I started to look at regional scenarios, but it became too unwieldy. Brodeur was the only one we considered, and we didn't call anyone else in.'
Brodeur's Phoenix office opened in January of 1998 and houses a staff of 15. Regional manager Brian Chapman will lead the account team, with help from senior consultant Peter Cohen, who will join the firm next month.
Cohen had previously worked for Avnet on a freelance basis and will bring a healthcare account with him to Brodeur.
Maag said the push to consolidate PR came from new CEO Roy Vallee. 'We were a dark firm, and didn't spend too much time on PR. Everyone was doing their own thing (regionally), but now we're streamlining responsibilities.'
In addition to corporate messaging, Brodeur will handle Avnet's electronics marketing (EMG) group. Prior to joining Avnet last August, Maag had handled PR for EMG through his own agency. Avnet's computer marketing division has the option to work with Brodeur as needed.
Brodeur's first assignment was to tout Avnet's June acquisition of Marshall Industries.
