HONG KONG: Ruder Finn has attempted to flesh out its Asian

operations by appointing veteran Asian journalist Peter Witton to head

its Hong Kong office.

Witton, named VP of Ruder Finn Asia, will coordinate work with the

agency’s Singapore, Beijing and newly opened Shanghai offices. He will

report to Louise Harris, an executive VP of Ruder Finn Asia who is based

in Singapore.

’Peter has a very good background and understands the important needs of

our constituencies,’ said Kathy Bloomgarden, president of Ruder

Finn.

Bloomgarden added that Witton’s appointment and the new Shanghai office

reflect a heightened commitment to the agency’s multinational

clients.

’Our focus is being able to serve our globally expanding clients,’ she

said. ’China is expanding and Shanghai is becoming an increasingly

important business center.’

China’s minister of foreign trade and economic cooperation, Shi

Guangsheng, has reportedly said that China’s exports will improve in the

second half of 1999, while foreign trade overall will continue to grow

through the remainder of the year. This means a potential bonanza for

Ruder Finn’s high-profile clients in Asia, which include Pfizer and

Audi. Top-notch communications programs will prove essential,

Bloomgarden said, if these companies take advantage of the economic

opportunities.
