SAN FRANCISCO: Looking to bring its solid reputation in the hi-tech

space westward, Middleberg & Associates has opened an office in San

Francisco.

The New York-based firm decided to establish its own West Coast presence

after a partnership with Bay Area firm Graham Communica-tions fizzled

out at the end of 1998, according to president and CEO Don

Middleberg.

Managing director Heather Fondo, previously PR manager at Cybase, will

head up the fledgling office. Fondo said she is looking for both

director and AE-level hires to service Middleberg’s stable of five San

Francisco-based clients, which includes The Industry Standard magazine

and PetPlanet.com.

The firm also has one client each in Seattle and San Diego.

Middleberg certainly has its work cut out for it, with firms like

Niehaus Ryan Wong, The Horn Group, Blanc & Otus, Copithorne & Bellows

and Phase Two Strategies, among others, all calling the Bay Area home.

But Fondo said the Middleberg name does carry some weight in San

Francisco: ’I think we do have a competitive advantage, and that’s our

expertise. The ideal goal is to make the San Francisco office just as

strong as New York.’

The practice will no doubt focus on the red-hot consumer Internet space,

but Fondo also hopes to attract a share of business-to-business clients.
