DIARY: Your 11 o’clock appointment will be held at Devil’s Island

Nobody likes interminable meetings, especially in Silicon Valley, the hi-tech hub famous for bucking old-school business traditions like dark suits, top-down authority and profits.

Nobody likes interminable meetings, especially in Silicon Valley,

the hi-tech hub famous for bucking old-school business traditions like

dark suits, top-down authority and profits.

But at Alteon Web Systems, director of market communications David

Callisch has taken the Valley’s loathing of formality to another level.

He has renamed the firm’s 10 conference rooms after prisons: Attica,

Bastille, Devil’s Island, Joliet, Leavenworth, Pelican Bay, San Quentin,

Sing Sing, Soledad and Tower of London. What, no Alcatraz?

’Being in a meeting isn’t a fun thing,’ Callisch said. We agree. But are

clients unnerved when they hear that they have a meeting at

Leavenworth?

Callisch said he wanted to make it as ’embarrassing’ as possible for

staffers to schedule meetings. He didn’t return calls seeking comment,

however - perhaps he was unable to escape from Sing Sing.
