DIARY: If you build it, the rains could come

If you build it, they will come ... unless the weather intervenes.

The Iowa-based Garst Seed Company learned this the hard way on the eve

of a recent media event. The company had sponsored the building of a

6.4-acre cornfield maze behind the Iowa baseball field seen in the film

Field of Dreams, and invited roughly 100 reporters for a media preview

on July 21. Garst even arranged to take reporters up in a helicopter to

get a prime view of the maze, which features the company name carved out

in corn.

Unfortunately for Garst, the skies opened up on the night of the event,

washing out a local bridge and forcing a postponement. But the company’s

PR manager, Jeff Lacina, remains undaunted by the setback: he checked

the weather forecasts and rescheduled the press briefing for last

Wednesday.

Lacina hopes the maze will be a PR boon. Its opening coincides with the

the 10th anniversary of the film.
