ALBANY: The New York State Department of Taxation & Finance is
scrambling for a director of communications in the wake of Chris
McKenna, who resigned late last month, is leaving the position for an
internal communications post with the New York State Senate. Named
director of majority conference services, he will coordinate
communications between the state senate office and New York’s 36
majority state senators.
McKenna said the position appealed to him for several reasons, not the
least of which is that it will involve little media relations. ’That
certainly was attractive,’ he quipped.
Although he was the lead spokesperson for the taxation and finance
department, the loss of McKenna is expected to have little impact on the
tax and group’s communications operations.
The office has two assistant directors for public information, Ruth
Burkhard and Michael Bucci, who will serve as spokespeople for the
department until McKenna’s replacement is named. The Governor’s Office
of Appointments will lead the search to fill the vacancy, according to
Prior to joining the department, McKenna served from 1995 to 1998 as a
press spokesman for former Attorney General Dennis Vacco. Prior to that,
he was a press spokesman for Senator Ralph Marino.
