Have fax? Your press release will travel

NEW YORK: If you want to get your clients onto the international

business pages, be sure not to abuse journalists’ e-mail addresses.

This was one of the findings in a study conducted by the Global

Financial Communications Network (GFC). Sixty percent of journalists

want to receive press releases by fax, as opposed to 33% who prefer

e-mail delivery.

The study, which included interviews with 117 financial journalists in

New York, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Zurich, London, Brussels, Paris and

Frankfurt, found that only journalists in Hong Kong prefer to receive

releases via e-mail. While 89% of those surveyed have e-mail access at

work, journalists in Germany and the US are the most stingy with their

e-mail addresses - only 50% will provide their e-mail addresses to PR

professionals.

’It may have more to do with culture,’ said Martin Mosbacher, Trimedia

managing partner and the US member firm of GFC. ’We do notice people are

more protective of their e-mail addresses than their fax numbers.’

However, this protectiveness doesn’t necessarily translate to their

views on overall hi-tech communication: 28% of journalists said e-mail

accounts for most of their communications. And technology plays a major

role in their research efforts, as 80% conduct Net research at least

once a day.

’What a lot of reporters are saying is, ’Don’t clutter up my mailbox

with unimportant stuff,’ ’ said Mosbacher. ’But for critical

information, this survey shows that if it’s really important, they will

take it by e-mail. They want letters and materials that are specifically

relevant to them via e-mail.’
