MONTVALE, NJ: The corporate PR shuffle among automobile

manufacturers continued last week when Mercedes-Benz USA hired Elke

Martin away from Saab Cars USA.

Martin, who assumes her new post today, becomes general manager of

corporate communications. She replaces Steven Rossi, who earlier this

year became VP of global product communications for Mercedes parent

DaimlerChrysler.

While the titles are different, Rossi essentially filled the position

left vacant when Steve Harris moved to head up PR for General

Motors.

Following the merger, DaimlerChrysler lost several long-time Chrysler PR

people to GM, so the Martin hiring is something of a

’turnabout-is-fair-play’ move for Mercedes. GM is one of Saab’s two

parent companies.

In filling Rossi’s old job, Mercedes USA had been looking for someone

with foreign luxury car experience who was also accustomed to

maintaining the identity of an auto brand that is part of a larger

automaker. Martin said her mission at Mercedes is to ’protect and grow

the brand.’

The Mercedes USA PR staff numbers about a dozen people and interacts

with - but does not report to - the DaimlerChrysler team. Martin has

been communicating with Rossi and with Daimler HQ to keep them up to

date on her PR efforts.

Martin is from Stuttgart, where Daimler is headquarted. ’I’m quite

familiar with the product range and the culture,’ she said.
