SEATTLE: Publicis Dialog, the PR arm of French holding company

Publicis, is aggressively searching for acquisition targets in New York,

Chicago and San Francisco. But two of the agencies said to be on top of

the conglomerate’s list - LobsenzStevens and Selz/Seabolt Communications

- have denied reports that deals are imminent.

Publicis president Andy Hopson said the agency hopes to move ’within a

few weeks’ and that it is looking at firms ’across the whole spectrum of

incomes.’ He hinted at an air of urgency to the buying process: ’We’re

not as strong in PR as our chairman in France would like us to be.’ The

company is said to want a strong PR presence in the cities in which it

owns ad firms.

While LS chairman and CEO Art Stevens responded to the Publicis rumors

by stating flatly, ’We are not in play,’ he acknowledged that he ’has

conversations with people all the time’ about selling. Selz/Seabolt

president Patricia Pearson denied that the agency is talking with

Publicis, but confirmed she has heard rumors of its attempts to enter

the Chicago market.
