Last week, UDV’s Chicago-based central region announced the selection of

G/H as its agency of record, a decision that came shortly after the

southwest division chose BSMG.

BSMG and Fleishman-Hillard made the top-three short list in both

markets, while Publicis bowed out of the Dallas contest at the last

minute after discovering a potential conflict with an existing client.

In both regions, more than 10 firms initially vied for the business.

The central region’s choice of Chicago-based G/H stemmed from a desire

to work with a ’backyard’ firm that understood the local market,

according to Stuart Kirby, UDV central PR manager. Previously, PR

responsibility for various brands had been shared by several agencies in

the region.

In Dallas, UDV southwest PR manager Renee Cooper said BSMG’s one-year

contract could be extended if budgets allow. ’It was really important to

be able to work with someone who had knowledge of consumers in our

geographic region,’ she said. ’BSMG’s capabilities presentation was

outstanding.’

The northeast region, based in the company’s Stamford, CT headquarters,

won’t name an agency of record until next spring, said UDV PR director

Lisa Van Riper. New York’s Cairns & Associates has to be considered the

favorite for the business, however, as it is the only PR firm currently

working on behalf of the company in the northeast. Cairns promotes

several brands on a project basis.

’We’re very happy with what Cairns is doing,’ Van Riper said. ’But we

want to evaluate results first.’

Elsewhere, Cohn & Wolfe of Atlanta is handling PR for UDV’s southeast

region and The GCI Group’s Los Angeles outpost holds the western

contract.

UDV declined to disclose values for any of its five regional

accounts.

However, Cairns called UDV ’a dollars 1 million-plus client’ in a July

press release announcing that the agency would promote six additional

brands for the company.

UDV, the world’s largest wine and spirits company, was formed last year

following the merger of Guiness PLC and Grand Metropolitan, both based

in London. The new conglomerate, Diageo PLC, decentralized its combined

North American wine and spirits business into five regions. Among the

company’s brands are Jose Cuervo Tequila and Baileys Original Irish

Cream.
