If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, what does a prune do?
If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, what does a prune do?
The California Prune Board wants to find out. It has embarked on a major
push to tout the ’pruneburger’ as a low-fat lunch alternative. This
concoction, a patty made of beef mixed with prune puree, has been
popping up on a number of US school menus. Yum.
’The one word everybody uses when they try them is ’juicy,’’ board
spokeswoman Peggy Castaldi said. We can think of several other
words.
Besides the delectable pruneburger, The Prune Board is trying to find
other ways to get students to eat more of the 200,000 tons of the
fiber-rich fruit that California produces each year. The puree is being
added to barbeque sauce, hot dog mixtures and even cookies.
’More schools are asking to at least test these products, to see how
kids respond,’ said Castaldi. So if there’s an increase in school
violence this fall, don’t blame Marilyn Manson. Blame the prune.
