DENVER: Schenkein/Sherman Public Relations has upped its employee

communications capabilities by acquiring internal relations specialists

The Sage Group.

The relationship between the two firms dates back to when Schenkein, a

dollars 2 million agency, used Sage to increase its own employee

retention, according to agency president Bob Schenkein.

Schenkein believes that many agencies underestimate the impact of

employee relations, though the creation of new internal communications

units by Golin/Harris and others (PRWeek, Aug. 23) seems to show an

increasing awareness of the importance of this area. ’So many companies

really don’t pay enough attention to internal communications,’ he said.

’You just can’t be churning people through your organization.’

Eve Dreher and Margie Grimes, former Sage partners, will head what

Schenkein is calling its ’people performance’ operation, a group that

will handle workplace culture assessment, internal branding, executive

coaching and performance management for small- and medium-sized

firms.

Schenkein said the new unit has already generated interest from several

existing clients. ’We’ve implemented the program ourselves, so we have a

very solid grasp on how it works,’ he said.

While acknowledging that others are trying to serve the same market,

Schenkein said that internal PR is ’a purview of PR - it always has

been.’
